AUTHOR INTERVIEW WITH M.A FOSTER

Hi Melissa, can you tell us a little about yourself and your work?

I’m from Florida where I live with my husband and my shitzu, Rocky. I work full time as a bookkeeper and write stories in my free time. I have two grown sons, my youngest in college. I’m somewhat shy around people I don’t know but once I get to know someone then it’s on.

I wasn’t much of a reader in my younger years. I didn’t really start reading until about 5 years ago and then I couldn’t stop. I have a big imagination and in high school, I wrote poems and short stories but I never considered writing a book was possible.

Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre? If you write more than one, how do you balance them?

Jaybird just kind of fell into the Y/A genre because of the main characters’ age and I’m not all that happy about it. I’m pushing for N/A because I believe Jaybird is a story anyone, any age would enjoy.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned
 in creating your books?

Since Jaybird was my first book, I’d say I was surprised how well I could tell a story. I was also impressed by the powerful magic of an editor. I’ll probably need one for this interview. lol

What is the first book that made you cry?

Fifty Shades. LOL

What are common traps for aspiring writers?

Knowing who to trust. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. I didn’t ask enough questions nor did I listen to my gut and it cost me a lot of time and money.

What has your experience been like as a indie author? Bruises, highlights, lessons.

I’m new and I’ve only written one book. Breaking into the world of Indie is tough unless you have the right connections. I’m not the aggressive type so putting myself out there and making friends was hard. Especially, with those who have been doing this for a long time. I had no idea who to trust and in my desperation for help, I made some pretty bad decisions. I trusted the wrong people and I wasted a lot of money. However, I was lucky to make a few friends. Had it not been for them, I’m not sure Jaybird would’ve been published.

Does a big ego help or hurt writers?

I think having a big ego can hurt a writer. As a reader, I like to interact with an author, be a part of their world, relate to them. And I’d be crushed if one of my favorite authors turned out to be an asshole. At the end of the day, it’s the readers who matter.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

 Self confidence. Social Media. Goodreads.

Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym?

If I’d used a Pseudonym, I’d end up changing it every time I thought of something better. There is another author named Melissa Foster so I decided to use my initials instead.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything,
what would it be?

Stop doubting yourself and just write.

If you could spend the day with a character from one of your books who would it be and what would you?

No doubt, I’d love to go to a rock concert with Jayla King.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

My writing coach.

How do you balance making demands on the reader
with taking care of the reader?

I’m not there with my readers just yet. I’m still working on building my audience. I’d love to hear what readers want because then I’ll know they want more. I look forward to interacting with my readers and picking their brains.

How many unpublished and half-finished
 books do you have?

Six

Have you written any other books that
 are not published?

None that are complete. I’m about 1/3 of the
 way finished with Book 2.

What’s the best way to market your books?

Find a really good PR company. Interact with others authors, bloggers, and readers and get them to share. Word of mouth is always good marketing.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters
from the opposite sex?

Getting inside their head.

What period of your life do you find you
write about most often? (child, teenager, young adult)

Young Adult

How do you select the names of your characters?

I usually pick a first name to match the character’s personality. Then I used Google to help me with the last names until I find one that fits.

Do you read your book reviews? How do you
deal with bad or good ones?

Yes. I’ve been told not to, but I can’t help it. I think everyone is entitled to their opinion and I try to remember that we, as authors, put our work out the for readers. Some may not like what we write. And we may not always like or agree with their reviews. I do, however, think that anyone who rates a book lower than 3 stars is just being mean. Again, as a reader, if I don’t like a book, I move on to the next. I’m not out to hurt someone’s feelings.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that
only a few people will find?

Yes. Several.

What was your hardest scene to write?

Marcus King’s funeral. I had to walk away several times.
Now I keep a box of Kleenex on my desk.

What is your favorite childhood book?

I had a lot of Disney and Dr. Seuss books but
I don’t remember having a favorite.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Yes and not just my immediate family, but my entire family. (Parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins)

If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?

Paid attention in class. Got more involved in
creative writing activities.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Jaybird took me four years to finish, but in the beginning, I had a lot of distractions and I wasn’t entirely committed to it.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Yes and when it happens, I walk away and read a
book or find another way to relax.

What would be your dream for any of your works?

I’ve been told Jaybird would make a great series because of the number of characters. That would be fun.

FALLEN CREST PROMO - AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Author Interview Special
with
Tijan

On the 8th May I started doing a daily promo with a count down of all the Fallen Crest books by Tijan, the covers, teasers and the book links. It started with the very first book Mason which was the prequel and it ended with the final book in the series Fallen Crest forever that was released yesterday. I asked Tijan if she would do a special interview about the Fallen crest series. So here it is, I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I loved chatting with Tijan.

Q:How did you come up with the idea of the fallen crest series?

Tijan:No clue! I heard the song Sail by AWOLNATION and sat down and wrote the outline in three days.

Q: I know you have probably been asked this many times before but I have to ask. Who did you visualise as Mason and Logan when you started writing the fallen crest books?

Tijan:I very rarely ever visualize anyone as my set character. I want to say I never do, but there’s a couple new projects I’m working on that I have. With the Fallen Crest characters, there’s no one in my mind though. I really like to let the readers have their image and respect that. I’ve been that reader who had an image, then the author came out with their pics, and I was a little heartbroken because that’s not who I thought at all.

Q: When you first wrote book one in the series, did you know back then how many books there would be?

Tijan:No. Way! Lol! When I say I didn’t know what I was doing back then, I really didn’t. I just wrote FCH and then published it because so many people were stealing it as their own on Wattpad. I had people writing their own sequels to it, and I couldn’t handle that. I didn’t want to lose it, so I pubbed it and it’s the book that started my career. I actually wrote FCH as a standalone, but the ending was a to be determined kind of thing, then I had an agent ask me to write up a synopsis for a sequel and that really got me going with Fallen Crest Family.

Q: You have kept the readers myself included hooked and you have teased us on which brother would be the luckily guy to have Sam. I am sure readers are dying to know as am I,
did you ever think that Sam Should of been better with Logan rather than Mason?

Tijan:If I have, it wasn’t my intention at all. Sam was close to Logan and there was ‘something’ there, so I wanted to deal with it in the books. Or, I knew I had to, hence the ending of Fallen Crest Public and one of the storylines in Fallen Fourth Down. Sam and Mason have always been it, though. As a writer, you really feel the pull towards characters and it’s not something I could change even if I wanted.

Q: Throughout the series there has been some highs and lows with the Fallen crest characters. Which high and low did you find harder to write?

Tijan:There’s a ‘high’ moment in Fallen Crest Forever that had me in tears. It’s with Sam and running, and every time I read it, I start tearing up so that one for sure. There’s also another moment in FCForever where I wrote a chapter in Mason’s point of view, where he’s about to do something and it gave me chills. Actually, there’s two moments in the book from Mason’s pov that does that. Other moments: when Sam gets beaten up in the bathroom. I don’t like that Sam got hurt, but writing that gave me some adrenalin. Then the moment where Mason, Logan, and Nate had Analise drink wine. Looking back now, I can’t believe I did that; but I went with it. The guys do some serious shit.

Q:Which one Mason or Logan?

Tijan:BOTH! I love them both.

Q: What would you do if you were stuck in a room with
Logan for twenty-four hours?

Tijan:Fight with him. I’d bicker with him to get him riled up. He’d be entertaining to me then.

Q:Sam is very athletic running all the time, who do you think would win out of her and Mason in a race?

Tijan:Mason is faster, but she’d win in a long distance race.

Q: Fallen crest Forever comes out on the 16th May, all the fans of the series are sad its coming to a end. How do you feel now its an end of era with the fallen crest series?

Tijan:I just hope everyone’s happy with the last book!

Q: What has been your favourite highlight of the entire series ?

Tijan:The last book! I put a lot into it and I hope the readers can see that, but the last book is the highlight for me.

Q: What moment sticks out to you out of all the fallen crest books and why?

Tijan:My answer would be the same as the question above about the ‘highs’ and ‘lows.’ I think I unintentionally answered it there. Lol!

Q: What can readers expect in fallen crest forever?

Tijan:You will see! I’m not teasing here, but I don’t
want to spoil anything either.

Q:What would you like to say to your readers who have stayed with you on this amazing Fallen crest journey?

Tijan: Just to thank you. Thank you for loving them. Thank you for taking them into your heart. Thank you for fighting for them. Thank you for supporting them. Thank you for crying with them, for them, and because of them. I will say that if a show or movie ever happens with the Fallen Crest characters, it won’t happen because of me. It’ll happen because of the readers. You guys are just amazing.

**********
This has been a awesome count down to the final book in the fallen crest series I hope everyone has enjoyed this brilliant series as much as me. Remember you can always go back to the very beginning to enjoy the characters all over again.

Wave Review by L.M Evans 23/4/2017

Synopsis

Determination. Dedication.

Miley Rose never should have been in the water that afternoon. Tourists have no business swimming in local surfing areas, but there she was, being taken under by a ten foot swell.

This is the story of loss - pain- and finding courage to continue when none seems possible. Find out if love can save a lost soul, or if the majestic waves of the sea will wash away the hope for a new future.

MY REVIEW

This was a touching story about two people that find each other when they are at their lowest, things are go down a very dark path for Baz and Miley. But despite the pain and troubles that they have been through in life, they some how find light in at the end of the tunnel.

This book is a emotional roller coaster, the pain and the suffering the characters go through hits you hard like a punch to the chest. You can't help but cry for all the pain, the hurt they endure and for the first time ever I felt sorry for the leading man in a story to go from having a second chance to having it taken away in a blink of an eye.
I have read loads of books over the last few years but Wave is the first book to ever leave me in tears throughout the book as well as a lump in the throat. The further I read through the the book the more it pulled on my heartstrings and even after I had finished reading I was still in tears. I have never been like that with a book but for some reason this book just really got to me.

Jenn Foor is one of my top go to authors, I have read most of her work and as much as the Mitchell & Mitchel Healy books are my favourite. Jenn know that already, but Wave it's one of those books that rips your heart apart and has you balling like a baby in to a bowl of ice cream. This is one that stands out above all of Jenns books simply because of the way the story is told. This needs to be made into a big blockbuster movie, I for one would love to see this up on the big screen.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS PLAY REVIEW 25th March 2017

Little Shop Of Horrors

Little Shop Of Horrors is a horror comedy rock musical by composer Alan Menken and writer  Howard Ashman, about a hopeless florist  shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh. The musical is based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film The Little shop of horrors.

Review

This was the second time for myself to see a play in the Red House I previously seen Grease with my daughter in 2016 . I had never seen the Little shop of horrors play before anywhere else so this was another new one for me.  I of course had seen the film many times before so I kind of knew the songs already so I wasn't going in totally blind.

The show did not disappoint, the sets were brillant and tbe cast were amazing. The acting talent within the show was simply phenomenal, we have so much talent in the local area, it's outstanding. The show was really funny and you couldn't help but sing along to the classic songs.  The whole cast were amazing but for me there was two stand out perfomers. Jac Ellis as Seymour and Ashley McGill as Orin Schrivello (The Denist).
Jac Ellis as Seymour was incredible, the voice and the acting skills on this boy for such a young guy is crazy. He has a bright future on the stage ahead of him. He also made me jump out of my seat with the plant, I swear i thought  the plant was going to land on my lap Lol.

The other stand out performance was Ashley McGill as Oriin Schrivello, OH MY FREAKING GOD !! From the moment he walked on the stage he had the whole room roaring with laughter. He owned it he belongs on stage. Ashley had me in tears from laughing so much, he should have his own comedy sketch show.

Well done to the whole cast and crew on stage and behind the scenes. The show was absolutely brilliant and you did Merthyr proud, so much talent on the stage tonight. Really hope to see more of you in future plays at the Red house.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW Alice La Roux

Author Interview
With
Alice La Roux

Hi , can you tell us a little about yourself and your work?

So my name is Alice, I’m 24 and a newbie writer. I live in South Wales with my husband and my little Jack Russell where I work in a boring retail job by night and write in the day.

Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre? If you write more than one, how do you balance them?

I’m a newbie, like I already said so I don’t have a set genre yet. My short story that published at the end of February is erotica with BDSM elements but the short ‘Lie To Me’, which features in the Tales from Wales anthology is fantasy/supernatural. I also have a steampunk YA novel dedicated to my niece in the works.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned
 in creating your books?

The Indie community constantly surprises me, I learned that people are willing to believe in you even when you don’t believe in yourself and that keeps me going some days because no one tells you how hard, demanding and draining it is to pour parts of your soul out onto a page.

What is the first book that made you cry?

Harry Potter – I am a huge Potterhead, with a deathly hallows tattoo to prove it. In the Order of the Phoenix when Sirius Black falls through the veil I couldn’t believe it. I kept re-reading the section over and over because I wanted it to somehow magically change. I needed Harry to have a happy home and when Sirius died I cried.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?

I think a common trap is thinking that it’s going to be easy. That you’ll just magic up 50,000 words, a huge fan following and be a bestseller on Amazon but it’s not that simple. It’s endless promoting, take overs, offers, giveaways, signings, interaction and sometimes it’s hard and you feel like your head is going to pop off!

What has your experience been like as a indie author?
Bruises, highlights, lessons.

I haven’t really had a huge amount of experience as a writer yet, but I love the Indie community. There is always someone available to give advice, help, read through or just sometimes make you laugh.

Does a big ego help or hurt writers?

I don’t know, a lot of authors I know seem to suffer from the same self-doubt issues that I do and I haven’t really met one with a big ego yet so I can’t tell you.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

I tend to overuse pronouns, and sometimes my phrasing is clunky. In a recent writing project I realised I was over using the phrase ‘That man would be the death of me.’ So I’d say that my writing kryptonite is repetition.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything,
what would it be?

Keep all your notebooks and all those scraps of paper that you leave behind everywhere. Keep them and put them somewhere safe, and don’t listen to that girl who said your writing was rubbish when you were 14. She’s a dick.

If you could spend the day with a character from one of your books who would it be and what would you?

Urm…… I’d spend a day getting inked up with Zeke.
 Inked up and naked.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

I haven’t really spent anything yet, a friend did my formatting, another friend designed my cover, and another edited for me – like I said the Indie community is amazing. I can’t wait to order postcards of Skin Deep though, I think they’ll be gorgeous and glossy.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

Too many to think about! I’m hoping to get three of them finished this year at least and two short stories are also going to be expanded in novellas.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing
characters from the opposite sex?

I don’t really find it that difficult; I actually prefer writing from the male perspective! My husband sometimes jokes that I should have been born a guy because I have a filthy mouth and an even dirtier mind.

What period of your life do you find you write about most often? (child, teenager, young adult)

Young adults, but I have a few YA books planned so
that should be interesting.

How do you select the names of your characters?

I’m a name whore, I love unusual and beautiful names and I wish I could use them all when I eventually have kids but I can’t and so I use them in my books. Some of my names are Avalon, Zeke (Ezekiel), Tessa, Aoife, Kerrigan, Nimue and Seraphina. I think part of writing romance and erotica is that unrealistic element, so why not have unusual names?

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal
with bad or good ones?

I only self-published the other week so this is the first time for me – but oh my god yes! I hit refresh waiting for new ones, I’m like a review addict and then I almost cry at the good ones! My lowest rating so far is a 4* one so I haven’t had to deal with any bad ones yet.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a
 few people will find?

There aren’t secrets as such but there are recurring characters. In Lie to Me we meet Aoife, and the second book will be about her. In Skin Deep we meet Avalon and Zeke but the second short, Surrender, will be about Avalon and how she got into BDSM so there will be a new face.

Do you Google yourself?

Sometimes, I think it’s hard not to in a society
that’s so media driven.

What is your favorite childhood book?

Mallory Towers, I wanted to go to boarding school and have midnight feasts.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

My husband proof reads for me, he gives me advice and he’ll tell me if he doesn’t like something. I’m extremely lucky to have him. My dad is my biggest supporter after my wonderful husband and my sister is tied with him. They both keep telling me to go for it, and that I should believe in myself more.

If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?

I would have gone for it. I would have shared my work more, had more confidence and I would have taken creative writing at university.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Hahhahahhahahhaaaa…….I still haven’t finished a full length one so I can’t really answer this one yet.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Yes, I get it when I start to feel stifled and I overthink every little thing. I start to panic and I go into this state of denial where the words don’t come. The best way to deal with it in my case is to go away, have a cup of tea and write something else, anything else. Eventually my brain will give me a scene or a description that would work brilliantly in my current WIP.
